black fondant icing.? I have been asked to make a birthday cake that is covered in black fondant icing.... I have used black before but not with very good results.
I use cornflour to roll it out so it doesnt stick but it leaves a dull coating...tried brushing it off but it does not make any diffrence.? Is there something else I can do.?

You can buy it ready coloured (e.g. Regalice are good).

You could also colour some paste grey and then paint it black using food paste. Sugarflair black extra is probably the best in being the blackest black colour.

Roll the black paste out and either use vegetable fat or cling film or a fondant mat for this instead of icing sugar/cornflour. if you do use sugar, steam it afterwards to get rid of the white dusty marks. Goodies from any decent cake shop and larger Tescos.
Another way that works well is to cover the cake in fondant then dust all over (liberally) with black dust then quickly steam to set the colour.

I roll coloured icing between sheets of plastic ( opened-up sandwich bags will do fine ) I peel off the lower sheet from one side, place the whole lot onto the cake then peel off the upper sheet. A bit of trimming, and smoothing with the hands is all it needs to finish it off. No need for cornflour or icing sugar at all.
