Just recently we've had two corned beef tins minus their key-opener, as you will no doubt know, the edges are almost impossible to open with a tin opener- has anyone solved the problem?

I always open my tin with a can opener. I may be just have been lucky but haven't had a problem at all. The keys are a health hazard....i'm surprised they're still allowed! Mind you i'm always an accident waiting to happen :)
either use a normal tin opener, or attempt to grab the strip with pliers, winding them around. Be careful, though - I have cut my myself a few times attempting to hack into to a tin of corned beef. You may find it cheaper to buy a new tin (with key) than take a taxi to A&E
Last couple I bought had ring-pulls but in the past I have opened them with a can opener, the sort that cuts below the rim.
Its better and safer to open them with a normal tin opener .
Buy another can of corned beef and open it as usual. Then use a pair of pliers to undo the rolled up metal, giving you the key back to re-use on another tin which didn't have a key.

That's what I've (successfully) done in the past but I now always look for the key before purchasing!
I have an electric can opener which opens them easily. I never use the 'key' opener.
I haven't used the key for years since I ended up in A&E - always use an ordinary opener now.
An electric can opener does the job perfectly.
Same problem, OH uses a pair of pliers. Must go - car wouldn't start this morning panic is mounting.
If a tin has no key I would just take it back to shop and exchange it or ask for a refund as the goods of not fit for purpose. The worst scenario, and this has happened to me a few times, is when you start turning the key and half way round the bloody thing snaps!

Thanks for all your feedback, I actually had one of the sardine tin gadgets, and have the bit for getting them out, but the insert with the slot for the key has gone AWOL, I hate opening corned beef tins, they are lethal, and don't worry, we'll check there are keys when we buy

Wud you believe it People's, I went on a proper search for the key tin opener and lo and behold,it's een under my nose all the time!
As a bit of an aside - the key tin opener from such foods unlocks supermarket trolleys that are linked together and need £1 coins to release ;-)

Thanks Captain2, good idea! We have a coin thing for undoing them but I sometimes struggle to remove it (nails too long) but can usually find someone who can
