'Only available at Easter'? Where do you live? they are in the shop 12 months a year at my Tesco and Morrisons.
The cross is to remember the crucifiction of Christ on the cross on Good Friday or 'God Friday' as it was originally known!

I'm nearly an hour away from Tesco.... and no Morrisons in Ireland....maybe I just switch on to them when Easter comes along. What is the spice used...think I'll have to make them myself to guarantee supply!!
I think that it's Cinnamon, but not really sure.

Thank you very much, will have a go.... but not today! Happy Easter
All year round at Asda, too. I'd use cinnamon AND mixed spice.
I seem to remember they were only available around Good Friday when I was a child. That was the only day we were allowed to eat them!
It is cinnamon. I don't like them.
It depends on the recipe...some say cinnamon, some say mixed spice and some (including me!) say both. I'll eat hot-cross buns every week of the year...no problem. What's not to like?
Cinnamon I suspect. Had three for breakfast, cut in half, with a good coat of " surely this is not butter" on each half. Bleedin' lovely!
