We are having chicken with chinese stir fry vegetables for dinner, this evening. I have forgotten to buy a stir fry sauce to add for the last few minutes. I don't really want to go out and buy one.

Any ideas for a sauce I can make out of store cupboard ingredients?

Any pineapple juice of any sort?
Question Author
Got a tin of pineapples, Gness. I think. I'll just go and check.
Soy sauce or sweet chilli sauce?
Question Author
Pineapples in light syrup.:-(

I have apple juice.
Have you got any ginger or honey or just soy sauce? You could put either ginger or honey with with pineapple.
I make this up as I go along so no exact recipe....

Sweet and Sour Sauce......My everchanging recipe but it works....

Juice from tin of pineapples......same amount of malt vinegar......couple heaped spoons brown sugar....or more to taste.....other will do at a pinch.....BIG pinch dry mustard.....wet if you don't have dry......spoon of tomato puree/sauce....
I add paprika when I have it......
This is the base......add some seasonings to your taste.

Stir all together and slowly bring to boil.....thicken to your liking with cornflour.

Unfortunately, Margo, I cleared out my fridge before we went away and don't have any soy or sweet chilli sauce. I have honey, wholegrain mustard, garlic, pesto..........

I'm going to have to go out, aren't I?
If you're stuck try the apple juice with a bit more sugar....keep tasting....
Sweet and Sour is just anything sweet and anything sour fiddled about with......not going to guarantee the apple juice but I'll give it a go one day......x

Thanks Eve. That's something to go on.

Gness, would your work with apple juice, do you think?

Needs soy sauce but could you tone down some ketchup instead, have you got an Worcester sauce?
Question Author
oh, crossed posts, Gness, but thank you.
Question Author
I do have Worcester sauce, Eve.
Or a little vinegar to sour the tomato ketchup?
If you don't want to go out just mix a little of what you have that we've suggested in a cup, play about with it....taste and you'll know if it's okay......x
And if you come up with something new and fantastic that sells......we all want a cut!.....☺
Ooh, if you have honey and wholegrain mustard, that makes a gorgeous glaze sauce for chicken (and chipolatas!) so you could cover the chicken in that and cook?

Tomato sauce and some Worcestershire sauce could make the sour part.
I've cheated tonight! They had salt and pepper chicken and chow mein noodles at a street market in town so brought some home as was too knackered to make anything (any excuse....). It was lovely!

Salt and pepper chicken is another possible if you have flour and egg.
Pineapple juice, tomato sauce and a dollop of the mustard?
Ps Tilly - I never put my soy sauce in the fridge.
