Boiled Egg Help Urgent Before My Head Explodes
26 Answers
I am making breakfast for 4 tomorrow and need to know how to cook boiled eggs very slightly soft on the inside so we can dip soldiers in. Please note I will be putting them in the water when the water is boiling (that is an important factor).
Also what is the best way to cook the soldier's so there is butter on and they are still nice and firm for dipping in the softie egg.
I only have 1 attempt at this ladies and gentlemen so please give me your experience written in a bomb proof paragraph ;)

Bring it up to the boil and when large bubbles are breaking on the surface quickly but gently lower the eggs (from room temperature) into the water, one at a time, using a tablespoon.
Now switch the timer on and give the eggs exactly 1 minute's simmering time.
Then remove the pan from the heat, put a lid on it and set the timer again, giving the following timings:
6 minutes will produce a soft, fairly liquid yolk and a white that is just set but still quite wobbly.
7 minutes will produce a firmer more creamy yolk with a white that is completely set.

First off do not lower eggs into boiling water you will bust at least one. Have the water boiled, but just off the boil. Eggs at room temp. not out of the fridge. Lower the eggs gently into the water, which should just cover the eggs. Medium sized eggs will take 3 and a half minutes, large 4 minutes. Once the eggs are in turn up the heat and as the water starts to boil start timing. Lower the heat but maintain a gentle simmer throughout. Salt needed with soldiers.
Soldiers depend on your bread for toasting. When I am feeling nostalgic I ignore the toaster and fire the grill up. ( Next best to an open fire and toasting fork). Best results are with fresh white tin loaf or a cob. When the grill is hot, toast under but be vigilant. No burnt edges . Keep the toast vaguely warm and make sure the butter is not rock hard. Butter before cutting into soldiers or topping the eggs. English breakfast tea and a jar of thick cut marmalade is a nice accompaniment.
Don't laugh - but this is how I cook boiled eggs and they are usually perfect. Put the eggs in a small pan, cover them with water, bring them to the boil, then turn the heat down so the eggs are not bouncing about, then sing three verses and choruses of 'Onward Christian Soldiers'. You don't have to know the words - just the tune. Causes great hilarity amongst my family and friends - till they try it for themselves!
I always put my eggs into cold water (only just enough to not quite cover them and in a small pan) because that way you avoid the risk of them cracking. Bring smartly to the boil and boil for 2 mins. - no more. This works fine for medium/large eggs.
For the toast, timing is vital so practice today. Set toaster to give a light finish. When you know how long it takes you are half-way there. Put the oven on very low beforehand because you will be warming the
plates a bit anyway and then you can keep the toast warm in there for a couple of mins. if necessary and slap butter on and cut them whilst the eggs cook for 2 mins.. Best of luck, the simplest meals are the most difficult!
A friend does B & B and offers scrambled eggs with smoked salmon for breakfast because it is so much easier! Most people choose it and it gives her a great reputation - her dread is a demand for poached eggs. :)

just after having the boiled eggs - turned out not too bad - could have been a bit more yokey. but having talking about my diabetes or lack of diabetes yesterday - doing without carbs etc etc - how the hell do you eat your eggs without your soldiers. oh please.
Doing without carbs would be so hard for me as I do not like vegetables except in soup. So I will wait for the grim reaper as I lose my stones and stones. LOL
