Beer Barrels

Hi Vinny, my husband used to work for a well known brewery & has just informed me that the smallest wooden kasks are normally around 9 gallons in capacity. Also, very, very, few independent brewers still supply their beers this way. The normal container for real ales would be an alluminium kask, lined with stainless steel, which is far easier to sterilise.

Cheers Smudge.I was watching an old film,and this guy had a small barrel with just a tap inserted,thats what gave me the idea.Thought it would be novel for xmas.pity...nine  gallons..sounds like a good night!!(~:)(are you still watching over us FP)

If you want something for a party try a polypin 36 pints; basically a heavy duty plastic bag in a carboard box with a tap.  Polypins & Minipins contain real ale, which is conditioned in the container and therefore has a small amount of yeast sediment present in the beer. For best results the beer should rest in position for 24 hours prior to serving allowing the beer to clear.Most small breweries do them and prices depend on beer strength.

You can still get the wooden barrels but quite rare and tend to be used until they fall apart and are replaced with Aluminium ones.

Check with your local beer wholesalers. They might even lend you the the neccessary stuff for tapping.
