Not a really radical change but I stopped eating anything sweet years ago. I do not have/ take sugar with anything. I don't eat cake, biscuits, sweets, chocolate, desserts....anything which is remotely sweet.
I know there is hidden sugar in some products but I do try to avoid them. My biggest bugbear is bread......I find most bread far too sweet and it spoils my sandwich.
I changed to low carb about 5 years ago. I'd always been a comfort eater and was capable of eating whole packs of biscuits,donuts...huge plates of rice or pasta. I was addicted. It had to stop. I'd read about a low carb diet that sounded like it might suit me...it was a lifestyle change, and has suited me well. Every once on a while I slip...and feel like rubbish when I do...joints ache, fatigue, bloat. If I eat carbs now,I stick to carby veg or sometimes brown rice. No pasta....(I need a name change!).
At my age and my previous ailments I am past redemption. I am just going to continue to do what I want,as long as it is legal and doesn't upset my fellow man.One of the next load of medical procedures I have lined up for me,already, for 2016 will probably kill me any way so why should I die miserable? Might even take up smoking again. Always missed that from day one. Nearly 10 years ago. :-)
Love red meat and most of the things that were part of a staple diet years ago but now the diet stazi say is bad.
No Tilly....no wheat. If I start eating bread...or biscuits...I'll just plow through the lot. Really. And like you,I try to keep away from sugar. The only sweet I permit myself is very high cacoa content chocolate...has very little sugar in it.
