.......and a green vegetable.
and a good Cotes du Rhone or Crozes Hermitage
Definitely mash, with lashings of butter.
Mash or duchess potatoes and veg
I quite like something crunchy to go with the gravy - either roast parsnips or (whisper it) some chips.

Broccoli in cheese sauce is another favourite side-dish with stew/carbonnade type mains.

If you want greens, then purple sprouting broccoli is lovely.
Baby new potatoes.
There are no hard and fast rules so have just what you like to eat with a stew.
Same as Ummm - Duchess potatoes are a bit of a faff but go really well. Green veg - avoid sprouts or green beans, otherwise almost anything. Haricots vert are good if not overcooked in the French way.
Haricots verts means green beans!!!
^^^^ Mutter..... 'avoid broad beans'.
'
^^^ I know, Jack, fingers obeying wrong bit of mind again!
I love this with mash and a cheesy broccoli and cauliflower dish.

Thank you so much for all your suggestions and the wine advice was really helpful too 'cos I wasn't too sure about that either xx
a full bodied Cahors would go down well as to wine.....
Crispy, roast potatoes, every time !
I too would go with Duchesse or Boulangere with French beans.
Buttery mash or crushed spuds with fine beans .... mmmmm
Rice?
The creamy mash and beans but I would do a few roast parsnips as well.
