Do people still add a tip after a 10% service charge has been added or has that gone out now ???

I always imagine that the service charge will only be going in the bosses's pocket (to 'help' them pay their scivvy's wages) not the poor sod who has been serving me so well all night at my table. Only exception to this is if I've had a bad service and then they can sod off.
The 10% service charge is a rip off and I wouldn't tip if I saw it. I also hear many restaurants pool their tips, so a good waiter/waitress ends up subsidising the useless so and so who's related to the owner. On a separate matter, I won't even let the waiter walk off with my credit card. Apparently, this is where a lot of credit card fraud occurs, with cards being cloned, or card numbers being placed on blank payment slips. I've just re-read this and I sound a real grump.! Sorry!
I always tell the waiter NOT to include the service charge on the bill because I will tip him in cash seperately. This makes sure he gets it and not the owner who's done nothing to earn it.
There is no legal requirment to pay tips at all.

If the service is good enough I'll leave a tip whether there's a service charge or not. On my birthday last year, I had lunch with a friend in a wonderful restaurant. The food was superb and the staff were great. When they found out it was my birthday, they all lined up and sang 'Happy Birthday' to me. Yes, I know that this was part of what of they were taught to do, but everyone seemed to really enjoy that part of their job. There were also plenty of pleasant exchanges throughout the meal and the staff seemed genuinely happy to provide excellent service. The bill wasn't cheap - well we did drink two bottles of one of their best wines - and included a service charge. Despite this I was happy to leave a �50 tip.
