Are you lucky enough that you don't have to visit such shops?

The harder we worked, the luckier we got.
I would, I'm the original Queen of the reduced section x
I already do. We have an Approved Foods stall on our local market and frequently buy things there. Not been ill or died through it either.
Given that the items in the pic are packaged dry goods, I'd have no problem with that.

//The harder we worked, the luckier we got//
A sentiment that I happen to agree with but not really germaine to this thread ;-)
It would depend how far past the ' best before ' date it was. On most dry goods a couple of months wouldn't bother me at all. I use things at home that have crept over their ' best before ' date. I always think that as the date is often over a year ahead it's all a bit random, especially on tins which last a very long time. Wouldn't buy canned drinks as they can go flat.
I think for many people it's thrift rather than desperation that makes them buy these goods. Which is why the Poundshops and the cheaper supermarkets do well.
It is illegal to sell out of date food.

These items are `past their best` but still safe to eat. They may not taste just as fresh as they once were.

Personally I think if its keeping stuff out of landfill it can only be a good thing.
How would you know you weren't?
Both my sons ,now aged mid 30's left school and worked at the local Sainsbury's as a fill in job before embarking on their future careers elsewhere.
Both worked in 'Produce' at one stage of their time in the supermarket as well as the Warehouse.
Produce is the Fruit and Veg aisles. The manager at the time instructed the staff to take out packaged fruit and veg from the punnets/containers and add it to the loose fruit and veg on the shelves when the' Best By 'date expired.
This practice occurred over 15 years ago and I have no doubt it still goes on. We aint dead yet though
Bought it, ate it, many a time.
I don't buy out of date food (or past its best food) but I use dried and tinned things in my cupboard that are long out of date.

As long as it smells alright and hasn't got things growing on it I'll eat it.

Retro,
my ex worked for Tesco...
I could tell a few similar stories...
Does anyone else spoon the mould off jam, or am I just an icky mare?
If I were still feeding a family rather than just myself and had such a store close by, I would buy from them.
//Does anyone else spoon the mould off jam, or am I just an icky mare?//
Obviously not a war baby. Nah it's penicillin ain't it?
No
Yes
No...but currently I don't need to. I'm sure I'd change my mind if things changed though.
'But, would you buy out of date food, and why is this shop becoming so popular?'

No, I wouldn't unless I had to and it's the austerity measure isn't it? Not everyone has enough money to feed their families.

Well done to Paul for setting this up. Good man!

I agree that hard work pays off but what if you can't actually find a job? Stoke is one of the very deprived areas in this country with the closure of the mines, steelworks and potteries and those people who are less well off are not necessarily shirkers and ne'er do wells.

Some on here wont have it that austerity exists!
Nowt like burying heads in sands at times....
