Wines Of The Week

It's been a while since I posted one of these - my new life in Kerry has many, many good points, but access to quality wine at sensible prices is not one of them - thank heavens for Mr Aldi and Mr Lidl for at least keeping the flame alive.
Just three quick recommendations :
1. This was an Aldi special for Father's Day - if they've still got any left then 'fill yer boots' :

Probably the best wine for its price I've drunk this year - if it was £14.99 from Waitrose it would still be decent value and people would be raving over it.
A wonderful mixed palate of berries and cherries - with some real long-lasting aftertastes of bubble-gum and dark chocolate - drink with Roast Dinner and/or charred BBQ offerings.
2. My current staple plonk - a steal at £7.99

Not a wine for the faint hearted - big and powerful - not subtle but a lovely mouthful of ripe flavours. Drink with cheese and biscuits after dinner.
3. You shouldn't be able to buy Beaujolais Village for under about £9 - not unless it's awful. But this is just £5.99 and it's ... pretty good.

A light, fruity red for drinking with fish/salads - or lightly chilled as an aperitif on a hot afternoon

And, if you can find it, a Vila Nova from Portugal...a stunning wine with a rich viognier flavour, then quite minerally but then one hell of an after-taste in being long and intense, pleasantly so, £9 from a specialist shop down here in Falmouth - one of the best Portuguese wines I have had and I've been there enough times on business....
