I thought we were discussing restaurants, not Pizza Express / McDonalds etc ????
Of course it's about principles, the rules that you live your life by and how you treat other people. These shouldn't change just because you come into money.
It is not up to me to employ the already employed whilst out for food. I expect service that I would provide if I was in the profession no more no less. If less, maybe a complaint if more, maybe a word of recognition to their supervisor.
I'm an average person who goes to average restaurants, I won't tip a man £50 to get me to a table faster or for a better table, this is the UK.

If money should't be all that to me when tipping, then why is it all that to the waiter?

I need that 13% just as much as the waiter and if the food was 13% more expensive i'd probably go elsewhere anyway.

Then you've never had to look after the pennies that's all I can say. Must be a nice life.

A friend of mine never leaves a tip. What he does on a Sunday when it is closed I do not know where he goes
//...anyone can wait a table//

You've either never been anywhere where it is been done by an unskilled person or (more probably from your remarks) never been anywhere where it is done properly by a trained person. I doubt Pizza Express train their people to a very high standard (if at all) but you can believe me or not when I say that there is a considerable difference between being waited on by someone who has been trained and is skilled and someone who has "applied online" and seemingly been told to get on with it. And it always shows.
Average hourly salary for a waiter/waitress in the UK...

Not a lot.
I should have added...I bet they have to look after their pennies!
It's all well and good to say i've never been to a fancy restaurant but that's speculation.

I've dined at some of the most world class hotels known to man.
TD , you show something akin to contempt for those in that line of work, and it comes across as being very arrogant
That's codwallop Bobbi. If you see what i'm staying, it's about the money, not the principle.
Have you looked at my link...? I suggest you do.
TheDevil, I am a pensioner and have to look after the pennies as you put it, but my principles don't change irrespective of how much money I have.
We all need ‘principals’ to get by on TD, without them,we’re nothing...FACT!
And I too suggest you read Pastas link
Out of curiosity, I googled food server salaries in the US...
As low as $2 per hour. Speechless.
I suggest you do also Bobbi

"The top respondents for the job title Waiter/Waitress are from the companies Marstons PLC, Nando's and Pizza Express."

They make more than me on average.. so what? I should put myself in financial jeopardy just to be 'right on'? Pfft.

I would suggest that if you can't afford the whole cost of the outing including tipping where its appropriate then don't go.
If you feel you’d put yourself in financial jeopardy TD, then the answer is Don’t eat out !
Arrgghhhh....those are major chains, yet the pay is below minimum wage.
You...correct me if I'm wrong...most likely make your own decisions about what to charge. They can't.
No, it's don't be fooled into overpaying for a product or service simply because you want to signal a virtue.

Do you tip ur postman every time you order from amazon? I suspect not.

What about the poor cashier girl at Tesco? Give her a tip also?

No.

Where are your principles? Seems they come and go. Mine are solid and relate to my personal position at the time.
