Food/Drink That Has Really … Really …. Impressed You

Even though I’m not a foodie - I eat because I’d die if I didn’t - there are some things - simple things - that have impressed me enormously.

The tap water in Iceland….the wonderfully warmed brandy in Hungary … and the absolutely superb boiled new potatoes served on a boat turned restaurant moored on the River Orwell.

Just for fun in these dull days, what simple fare has impressed you?

A very plain omlette on a ferry in Greece. Accompanied by a shot of Metaxa brandy it was delicious.

I’m not a good eater but the Welsh rarebit at the Cap and Stocking in Kegworth is something that me and himself would drive miles out of our way to get (pre children).

Let me add to the brandy theme, one with coffee in a Spanish street cafe about 11am with nobody batting an eyelid. :-)

I still remember the time many, many years ago when I stopped at a restaurant somewhere in Pennsylvania and ordered something I'd never heard of before: a reuban sandwich...Wow, I was impressed with the taste!

The jam sandwich a Nurse made for me shortly after I gave birth to my first child.

There was a fryer who worked in a little chippie on the road to Skipton who did a spicy battered haddock that was just incredible.
He was headhunted to a fish and chip restaurant in Colne where they sold the spicy fish in the takeaway.
He's moved on now and I can't find out where.
That spicy fish is to die for.

The freshest of fresh crab from Southwold, oysters opened on a Vendée beach with a penknife (before I purchased an oyster knife), traditional old-school tapas in Seville......the list could go on and on.

I once had a waffle on a stick with melted chocolate sauce. That was in Legoland about 15/16 years ago.

Octopus in a garlicky sauce on a beach in Menorca. Yum!

Seafood Paella washed down with a bottle of Rioja.
During the last couple of warmish days I would of liked to sit in the garden with a platter of cheese and Crusty bread with a another bottle of red plonk. Simple fare but I really miss it. :-(

There's a steakhouse in Cambridge that was utterly brilliant. Best I've had. Another one near my house that is almost as good. Not sure if they are simple enough but it's "only" a steak.

For simple stuff, Cambridge Market has a place that does *the* best bacon and egg rolls. Every time I'm back there it's more or less the first place on my to-do list.

My mother always cooked beef until it was well, well done, so obviously did I when I left home. Being a little adventurous, I went to a restaurant once and ordered it medium-rare...What a bloody difference in taste; I couldn't believe it.

A chicken & mushroom pizza with french fries, washed down with Everest beer at Rum Doodle's Kathmandu.
For sixteen days our Sherpas when we trekked to Everest Base Camp looked after us superbly. But to get a meal which didn't smell and taste of paraffin was pure luxury. I can still taste the beer, and smell the pizza.

Straightforward fish and chips from No1 Cromer owned by Galton Blackiston huge portions perfect every time, also the local ice cream he serves just scrummy.
