It looks like what I believe the Scots call Tablet, but it had a taste of perhaps menthol?? This link shows how to make Tablet but what would be added to make it taste like Cough Candy? It was smooth on the outside but crumbly inside whereas Tablet looks like it may have a soft fudge consistency.

I remember it was awful, bleughhh
loved it, still do.
The one I recall looked like toffee on a slab then cut into squares, it tasted a bit like camphor, yuk
Cough candy had a texture like tablet or Kendal mint cake but tasted of aniseed.
Cough candy twists tasted the same but were hard, boiled sweets.
Yum, I loved both.
This is the cough candy of my childhood.

Mine too, mind you I disliked Kendal mint cake as well, must be the texture
I always thought of cough candy sweets tasting like Benylin with a clove type flavour that burnt your tongue.

This looks an interesting recipe, though I don't care too much for a strong cinnamon flavour.

Mamya, that is it Mrs Beightons Cough Candy. Unfortunately it doesn't say what the flavourings are. It says E150 which is the caramel colouring, but I'm still not sure of the flavour.
I was hoping that those who bake and make sweets would know the names of the flavourings that would have been added. Will keep looking.
You never seem to see aniseed balls these days neither.
Question Author
Mamya, the flavour used in that video was cinnamon, but I think Cough Candy was more medicinal tasting. Could it be camphor as Bobbs has suggested I wonder. I don't think it was minty.
Possibly a little clove?
I don't remember that but I did like Clove Rock. It was a boiled sweet.
This is how I remember them.

tigger those look like hard boiled sweets.the cough candy I'm talking about looks a bit like fudge. It's cut into squares and it's crumbly inside. The link that Mamya has put on is the right one.
Question Author
I think it's quite likely it could be a drop of this.
