I wouldn't usually post this, but I've been given 2 full glasess of wine....
I have had to have my 38 year old pony PTS today. I have had him since I was 13 and he was 5... as a a rescue. He started off as a total hooligan, as he hadn't been shown much love- and all my immediate family have the scars to prove it...
He was still winning jumping competitions just a few years ago, and I retired him abour 3 years ago, except for about 10 minutes, 2 or 3 times a week, for my granddaughter to ride. He was so gentle and loving. My 4 year old granddaughter still sometimes gives him polos wrongly, between her fingers, and he always uses his lips and not his teeth to take it from her, so he doesn't hurt her.
He has been a constant through some awful times, and my other horse is trotting around the field whinnying and looking for him.
Unfortunately, we could see he was starting to show his age- and this morning, he decided not to get up for breakfast or to go in the field. The vet said to check and ring back.... and he still didn't want to move, so he has now awfully, been shot in his stable.
RIP Matty, thank you.... we won't forget you xxxx

OMG so sorry Pixie, heartbreakin g for you. Deaths of pets, including other people's, always upsets me. You gave him a great life though and that's a tremendous age to reach. X X

So sorry, but what wonderful memories. My Strongbow was 34 when he had to be put down, he went down in the field and had to be got up by the fire brigade (he was built like the proverbial brick out house) then a few weeks later he went down in the stable and didn't even try to get up. People don't realise that you probably spend more time with them than you do family and friends - they are such a big part of your life. Remember the good times.
Thank you so much, eacha and every one of you- it means a lot xx
I am still quite drunk and upset, apologies....
Margie, I wish I had thought of that, but since early this morning, I have just tried to distract myself.... I'm not sure if horses are scared of death., although I have done that with dogs and people before. He was taken away at the time.
Rasmus, my other one, is in his usual field, with 7 friends who he has known for many years. We have given him extra attention, but he has known his little friend for about 12 years, and has
definitely noticed.
Thank you so much every one xxx he is a haflinger, so they tend to have a good life span and while I knew it would happen at some time, it still ends up being a shock xx
