Son has been tasked with several Bake Off challenges to do this week for school. On Monday we made sausage rolls, today we're making brownies and tomorrow he has to make an animal themed show-stopper cake. I saw the sausage roll and brownie bit and got ingredients last week but completely missed the show-stopper bit so I'm now panicking. I know you can get fruit cake bases to decorate but I've never seen plain sponge bases? Can you buy them?

Also need ideas on an easy animal cake. Not hedgehog though!

Fruit cake base and a tin of cat food?

Could you completely cheat and buy ready made victoria sponge. Not very good at this sort of thing but if you bought ready made coloured icing, black, white, pink and yellow, could you do cow face with necklace of daisies and tongue trying to eat them?
You could buy a swiss roll (or 2) and turn it into a snake.

Bit of fondant icing and some food colouring. He could have some fun prettying it up with different green and yellow spots on it.

Good ideas. I didn't even think about Victoria sponge or Swiss roll :o)

Lol, Wolf, I'm not keen on.......fruit cake!
tigger, you could just cheat & buy two sponge cakes and make just the cat face of the above recipe & cover with fondant icing & sweets.
marks and spencer sell madeira cake, plus Victoria sponge, plus fruit cake and so on. But if you're going to M+S you can buy the stuff you need to make it cant you?
I suppose as ever with work & child care, time is limited x

Well, quite!

I've got half day annual today and I've just booked another half day for tomorrow. Knackered already and I haven't even started! Lol
sorry tiggs, I thought your problem was you didn't have the ingredients :) I am all for making life easier where possible
If you are going to sainsburys, how about this recipe, only takes 35 minutes and looks good.

I'm actually making my granddaughter a number '7' cake at weekend, just need her out of the way to do it!
How about not doing it and telling the school to jog on (can you guess that I am fed up of bloody emails from the school because the things haven’t done some crappy bit of art work involving wet teabags?).
LOl I agree with Sherr, can't they think of something more academic for him to do or at least limit the baking - are you all supposed to eat this stuff as well?
Does seem a lot of baking one after the other but to a point, baking is academic. If using recipes there is reading involved, understanding and following instructions and maths with weighing ingredients.

I'm back.....got a ready made iced sponge cake and some plain cupcakes to decorate. Plus butter icing, different coloured icing to roll and make animals and kitkat to go round the outside.

Now off to make the flippin brownies...........!! Arrrggghhh
All this baking is encouraging sugar consumption. Maybe they should learn to make homemade soup instead.

Very true, Pasta. I hope the cakes freeze ok as there is no way we will get through them over the next few days.

The sausage rolls and brownies were technical challenges and the animal themed cake is the showstopper. No more cake baking after this so back to homemade soups.
I bet your brownies are better than the ones done on Bake Off!
