Wine Bottle With No Screw Top

I bought some wine today, couldn’t get it opened, took away all the wrapping away at the top and there was no screw top, had a taste and was unsure if it was ok to drink.

Atheist what’s age got to do with it, I’m obviously not as old as you are, I do know there are corked wines, most wines bought today have screw tops, easy access, I do have a lovely wine cork opener just in case!!

It had just all the plastic wrapping around it.

Usually, a screw top doesn't have wrapping around it. Only a cork does.If there was no cork and no screw cap, then surely it would have leaked all over the place?

Are you sure your OH hasn't had a swig LOL? Surely you'd have noticed when you bought it if it was like that when you picked it up?

I would say the majority of screw cap wines have the shrink-wrapped plastic around the top.

roy; I think you're wrong. There is usually a metal cap with breakable links with the bit that fits round the neck. I can't prove this, but maybe other ABers will shine some light on this important question.

I'm inclined to agree with Atheist, having never seen a screw cap with added shrink wrap.

If it was meant to be screw-cap, there would be a thread around the top...bottles meant for corks have no thread.

Sounds like a corked bottle but the cork hasn't been put in. A corked bottle with have an extra glass ring around the top to use the lever type opener. Wine is always moved upright so that the sediment is disturbed as little as possible and the foil or plastic round the top is usually very tightly fitted so could prevent a leak. I would take it back, there must be an awful lot more bottls the same.
