Bamboo Thai tops the TripAdvisor ratings for Thai restaurants in York but it's not central. (It's located on one of the main roads leading out of the city, about three quarters of a mile out. Buses 10, 10A and 67 run past there). It's also only open at lunchtimes on Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays. (Evenings Tuesday to Saturday):...

Some indication of the type of food you like might help people to make suggestions. Are you looking for traditional British food or excellent Asian food? Or would you like a good Italian restaurant or perhaps a steak house? York is packed with places to eat, so some guidance from you might help.
Also, as many of the best restaurants might open only in the evenings, are you wanting a meal at such times or are you seeking a decent lunch?
If you like Italian - also does English - La Vecchia Scuola, 62 Low Petergate (not far from the Minster), YO1 7HZ 01904 044600.

We always eat there on our 'ladies family trip' before Christmas.
It is an ex-school, very interesting surroundings to chat about and good food.
If you want something upmarket, Skosh is in the Michelin Guide and extremely well-reviewed:

If I'm anywhere where there's a Cosy Club though, I'd find it hard to resist going there. The food is fantastic, the service outstanding and the prices very reasonable:

I like Thai food and get tempted by restaurants which call themselves 'street food' places. (If you ever happen to be in Newmarket in Suffolk, the Thai street food place there is one of the best Thai restaurants I've ever been in). So, in your position, I might well try Zaap Thai Street Food, which is within the central part of the city:

I've also enjoyed Thai tapas in Norwich, so I might get tempted by Phranakhon Thai Tapas in York. It's both central and well-reviewed:

I think I might go for Phranakhon. Thanks Buenchico!
When I was visiting York several years ago, I popped into this place (pic courtesy Google Streetview) which was just round the corner from the B&B where I stayed. Very basic decor etc., but the fish and chips was out of this world, and the service very friendly. It's a bit out of the city centre so may not suit you (and of course there's always the danger that in 5 years it may have changed hands).

Nice one Mamya, thanks. Seems to be the same owner too, so presumably still excellent.
Well when we went we loved Bettys tea rooms. Good food, wide choice not just afternoon tea and lovely decore.
Hear Hear on Bettys, great service and wonderful food. Then stock up on cakes etc when you leave
