Bamboo Thai tops the TripAdvisor ratings for Thai restaurants in York but it's not central. (It's located on one of the main roads leading out of the city, about three quarters of a mile out. Buses 10, 10A and 67 run past there). It's also only open at lunchtimes on Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays. (Evenings Tuesday to Saturday):...

If you want something upmarket, Skosh is in the Michelin Guide and extremely well-reviewed:

If I'm anywhere where there's a Cosy Club though, I'd find it hard to resist going there. The food is fantastic, the service outstanding and the prices very reasonable:

I like Thai food and get tempted by restaurants which call themselves 'street food' places. (If you ever happen to be in Newmarket in Suffolk, the Thai street food place there is one of the best Thai restaurants I've ever been in). So, in your position, I might well try Zaap Thai Street Food, which is within the central part of the city:

I've also enjoyed Thai tapas in Norwich, so I might get tempted by Phranakhon Thai Tapas in York. It's both central and well-reviewed:

When I was visiting York several years ago, I popped into this place (pic courtesy Google Streetview) which was just round the corner from the B&B where I stayed. Very basic decor etc., but the fish and chips was out of this world, and the service very friendly. It's a bit out of the city centre so may not suit you (and of course there's always the danger that in 5 years it may have changed hands).
