Fish Pie

I was reading about someone the other day who says he makes a mean fish pie and his secret ingredient is adding some anchovy paste to the sauce. Has anyone tried this? I just wondered if it would make it taste salty.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I've not tried it but, as long as you keep the salt that you'd normally add anyway (I assume) to a minimum, I think that it would work well enough. (Most recipes seem to say 'essence', rather than 'paste' though):

I know people who swear by using Chinese fish sauce in almost any fish-based dish. (It's based around anchovies):
