That's a line from s song showing the unity our society enjoyed during a time of crisis, WW1. While our valient Tommies we're doing their bit in the trenches their sisters were doing their bit on the home front.
As we face a potentially dreadful winter could that spirit be revived? Might a new generation of knitters be recruited to provide balaclavas, socks, gloves, and scarves, for poor cold people?

Bobbisox1,
Do you drive? You could take poor cold people to a warm library.
There will be a role for almost everyone. ;-))
The only knitters from History that I'm aware of are the ladies round the Guillotine in Paris during the Revolution :-)

In a civilised society folk shouldn't have to rely on Charity.

It's bad enough that our Valiant Tommies already have to rely on charity after demob (e.g. Help for Heroes).
It was ‘shirts’ she was sewing, I think.
A library.

I remember those.
