Am I mistaken or of late has pub food become lower quality and the atmosphere less pleasant while the price has skyrocketed ? Difficult to find a nearby pub I really want to eat at any more. Time was when a pub either only did, crisps, hot pies, or the like, or went out of it's way to compete with small restaurants/bistros. Now it's either dead or very noisy, and the offerings could be from a transport cafe.

Same for me ......prices gone up and standard and amount of food gone down !
Probably because of the price hikes in food and electricity.

Staff don't seem to understand their trade either. I have a seat at a small but bearable table. I'm asked if I want a drink. Wanting to be precise I asked what beers they had on pump. Obviously wanting a decent ale. Difficult to hear the response at first due to noisy customers I then discovered I'd been listed 5 light lagery type brews ! I'm sure they aren't on pump. No real ale, no bitter, no brown, no mild, nothing worth drinking. It transpired they did have a couple of bitters after I'd said those listed weren't suitable. Having my doubts now that they were pumped from the wood.
I think you're right. I've noticed a difference lately. Waiting long periods of time, the staff seem miserable. We were told by some that there was a shortage of staff in a lot of places.

In fairness, despite criticism earlier, the meal was good. Which was a complete contrast with other pubs we've tried lately. Aside from the noise & price (and inability to answer about pump beer) it's probably the best in the area. (But the bar is a low one.)

Oh and yes, the beer took ages to arrive, the waitress was back to take the food order before it arrived !
Ohh, that's not on!...
We have not long been back from a visit to Witherspoons. I had a small scampi, chips and peas. OH had a mixed grill. A pint for him and a pint glass of wine and soda for me. (Didn't ask for that amount but it's how it came) all in just over £20. It was a really nice meal and service was fine.
Just thought I'd say we have some fantastic pubs with outstanding food and reasonable prices. The world, OG, is not all bad.
Gave up on pubs a long , the time ago OG
Drink and the so called food is rubbish. Happy to stop at home. :0)
Caran: And yes, We've had perfectly good food at Wetherspoons. Not always understood that it's not McDonald's, where everything is standardised. Different Wetherspoons have autonomy in their service delivery. In Teignmouth (South Devon) for example, people travel 20-30 miles to have some excellent grub.
Not where I live. It's got better. Country pubs need to produce good food to survive. Those that haven't have shut down.
We don't have noisy pubs!
The only time that I eat food in pubs these days is when one of my friends from Italy (who've got a flat here) is visiting. So it's left to me to do some research beforehand and, because I take the task seriously, we're rarely disappointed.

Prices have gone up recently, of course, but that's not really surprising. A basic pub meal around here (e.g. fish and chips) used to cost about £14.50 but now many pubs seem to have prices starting at around £16.50. (Some of the classier 'gastro pubs' in Suffolk have prices starting from £23.50). There are still some great pubs, with fairly reasonable prices, though, such as this one which is not far from me:

I feel your pain OG.

But my local does fabulous food at a reasonable price. All home made in their kitchen, nothing bought in.
And 6 real ales from their own micro brewery. All less than £3. Warsteiner and Amstel lagers also available. You can eat at your table in the pub or in the restaurant room with quiet piped music. Near Manchester.
Pub food is great. If it's not good where you're going, go somewhere else.
The WAGs criticised the standards? A death sentence, surely?
Anyone who imagines a chef slaving over a hot stove in Wetherspoons is mistaken.

The only exception may be breakfast.
