Just listening to that song earlier, and it got me to thikinking. In almost every job i've had, in the communal kitchen, there has been a receptacle for saving milk bottle tops, often with a "cause" attached to them ,,,wheelchair for someone disabled ... sports eqipment for the school, that sort of thing
1)does anyone else remember that?
2) was it just getting money for recycling
3) is that the reason you dont see it any more?

Having worked in an office environment for a lot of years yes I do remember but not seen it for the last few. One of the cleaners used to want the plastic tops off milk for some charity purpose. Before that it was stamps but hardly anyone sends business mail anymore, certainly not with stamps and years ago it was smelly bags to put the foil tops off glass milk bottles in. No idea though if any good came of any of it.
I certainly remember saving the silver foil tops off milk bottles, I've no idea what happened to them though!
I remember when we used to save the ring pulls from drinks cans and one of our drivers used to collect them for charity. Those days are long gone and nowadays the company collects them for recycling.
>>> is that the reason you dont see it any more?

Given that the vast majority of people now buy their milk in plastic or cardboard containers from supermarkets, I doubt that there are many foil bottle tops that could be collectedanyway!
The Blue Peter appeals for milk bottle tops (to raise money for Guide Dogs for the Blind) were a bit of a con anyway. Someone came up with the idea before really examining the viability of making money through recycling them. They ended up with skip loads of bottle tops that were eventually sold for just a very small sum.
Plastic bottle tops still collected here! You put them at the side of the recycling bins or take them to the fire department or Red Cross collection points
A lot of them are switching to clear plastic tops now, so they can be recycled with the bottles.
