I was chatting to my dear friend on Skype earlier this week. She is Irish and often says that English is not her first language, not that anyone would realise that fact.
We were talking about a birthday coming up this month and she recollected a special dinner party I had cooked years ago to celebrate OH's 70th - we had invited our closest friends and I splashed out on a meal of Chateaubriand followed by double chocolate & cream torte. Everything turned out like a fine restaurant's offering.
My friend remembered it well and said, "...oh yes, you cooked the magnificent Bichon Frise..."
When my laughter had subsided I said to her "...and French isn't your second language!" :)))
One of my favourites many yars ago came over supper when I lived in Brussels, the time when Princess Caroline of Monaco divorced, a dear close friend of mine commenting, "The Pope annulled the marriage as it was never consumed."
