The instructions say cook from frozen. I tried that but the filling was still cold while the crust was charred.
What did I do wrong?

Did you cook at the right temperature?
Did you have the oven up too high. I would cook at gas mark 4 to cook the insides for 25 minutes then turn up oven to cook & brown the pastry.
i cook the aldi ones for 40 mins

I must have had the oven set too high, 200°.
Yet instructions say 220° for 35 minutes.
I cut the burnt crust off and heated the contents in the microwave.
I usually cover pastry loosely with foil to stop it burning and take it off about 10 minutes from the end of cooking time to brown a little
do you preheat the oven ?
I'm a vegetarian but I do eat fish.
Question Author
I didn't pre heat the oven.
That's likely where I went wrong.
yes that will be it ,my oven takes about 10 mins to reach 200 x
I'd guess too high a temperature for too short a time.

Of course, you might try it in the main oven next time, rather than the microwave.
I do meat and potato pies in the air fryer, I use layers of raw sliced potatoes and raw mince and onion on top of that, I cover the top pastry with foil to allow the filling to cook then uncover and turn it up to brown. I am now feeling hungry but it's too hot for pies!
