My mind neighbour has given me some beetroot from her garden. Silly question, I realise they've got to be cooked. Do I boil them?? Skins on or off?

skin on or they might bleed, then you'll have white beetroot. We always pressure cook; difficult if you haven't got a pressure cooker.

Skin ON! And don't cut into the flesh itself...all the colour will bleed out. (They can take ages to cook).

I pressure cook them, too.

You could try microwaving them

If they are small, they are delicious grated raw (peeled first) and mixed with grated carrot amd sprinkled with vinaigrette.

For cooking, I'd peel them and slice or dice and add to stews etc. I suppose you coud simply boil them whole unpeeled and then do whatever you want. They are usually sold boiled.

I'd only peel them if they looked unappetising, i.e. scabby or damaged.

I should have added - we pressure-cook for about 20 mins, depending on size. Boiling will be about 2 hours - perhaps ask your neighbour how long. The skins will be easily removable by hand once they've cooled down.

I chop mine into wedges, toss them in olive oil with thyme and unpeeled garlic and seasoning and then roast them.

I will eat beetroot in any form, but my favourite way is exactly what Barmaid has said. It gets thrown in with all the other roasting veg (spuds, carrots, parsnips, celeriac, broccoli, etc).

But please dont get the idea of shoving them inside the turkey, because this week I've seen everything put in so far on TV. :>)

Since the taste of beetroot isn't very nice then I'd advise not boiling them. Hovere I have tried "vegetable" crisps and the dark purple beetroot crisps there are quite nice. I can only assume that frying does something to them. Maybe slice them thinly and try to make crisps ?

I place them in a  microwavable dish, adding two or three tablespoons of water. Microwave 15 mins or so depending on size. As said previously, don't cut into skin.

13.45, I totally disagree, I personally love the taste of raw beetroot!!!
