So it's going to be toast on its own for breakfast this morning.

The shipping of food from around the world especially fruit is, or should i say was finally tuned to arrive at its destination in peak saleable condition. The ordering / buying of those goods were also finally tuned ie, just in time.
Suppliers / growers are obviously all over the place of late, they've lost that important time table. Their only answer appears to be pick whatever crop early, in most cases before its even matured that way it wont be rotten by the time it reaches its customers. Neither will it be a great eat, and neither will some of it ever ripen if its been picked before having matured properly. Bananas are just one example the timing is critical. Of late bananas are all over the place.
Put them in a paper bag with a banana. Should take a couple of days.
sounds as tho the banana is giving off ethylene
Ethylene is a gaseous plant hormone that plays an important role in inducing the ripening process for many fruits, together with other hormones and signals. An unripe fruit generally has low levels of ethylene. As the fruit matures, ethylene is produced as a signal to induce fruit ripening.
Now, mods keep your mimsy deleting moddy fingers off this post: it is a proper scientific comment, even tho the ed has assured me privately that 90% mods will stop at "gaseous". Jesus
“Anyway Avocados are really not environmentally friendy are they,..”
They’re also not really fit for human consumption either. Ghastly stuff and smashing them up and spreading them on toast is an abomination. Poor toast.

I've heard they will go soft quite quickly if you chuck them in the compost.
Well, you A-haters. Whatever you do, don't try something new - it might be nasty. Lucky for you you don't live in a place where you have to learn to love what you can eat because there's no option (apart from pink snakes and green snakes).
I'm vegetarian and I don't eat meat (although some of it is delicious) but I can't think if any vegetable I wouldn't happily eat.
