Which type of 'pointing device' are you using?  A touchpad on a laptop? A wired mouse?  A wireless mouse?

First, try updating your touchpad driver.

If that doesn't work, try reinstalling it.

However if you're only using your laptop at home, rather than when you're out and about, it would make far more sense to use a mouse anyway.  (I'm using a laptop to type this but I never use its touchpad; I only ever use a mouse with it). 

You could either use a wired mouse (where you wouldn't have to worry about its battery running out)
