I have to confess that though I am a decent enough cook, mince pies are one thing that I've somehow managed to avoid making lol. However, seeing as MrSmow absolutely adores them, and he has been working so hard, I want to make him some. So who's got their tried and tested recipes for me to have a go at?

The BBC Good Food website is often a good source of recipes.  This one gets 5 stars from reviewers:

Ive been in hospital some time and dont know when I'll be home so cant give you precise recipe.  But basically its a good short pastry with orange rind added and then on too of the mincemeat you put az dollop of Philly cheese  beaten up with orange juice before covering with pastry lid.  It seems to mellow  the sweetness of the mincemeat.

I think but cant be sure its a very old Jocelyn Dimbleby  recipe if you want to Google x

Just make sure you have decent mince. Beef chuck is recommended

My wholemeal bread pudding almost tastes the same as MP by thd time I've finished adding everything i have at hand. Mixed fruit by the bucket load, walnuts, dates, honey. Yummy.
