Daily Record has a question to win 20 and it is:

What element has the symbol A?

Now i have searched everywhere for it (and did a level chemistry too) and there is no such element with symbol A. There are 8 with the symbol A# with # being another letter but none with A on its own.

I have rang the daily record to just confirm whether they made a mistake and missed a letter or something and had a snotty woman tell me that it is definately right and i just dont seem to be looking hard enough for it and to try looking harder before ringing up in future.

So... Can anyone out there tell me what it is please, because i am 99.9% convinced that the woman needs a slap for not only getting it wrong but making me feel like i am the one with egg on my face?

Don't know anything about science. But only thing that came to mind was Angstrom. Don't know if this an Element.

thanks val,

Angstrom is the symbol A but it is a unit of length and not an element.

I think that is maybe the answer they are looking for but are actually wrong with the question they asked.

Thanks again

Think you will find this is Argon. It is now usually Ar but as this is in Chambers dictionary, would guess it can still be just A :

A abbreviation: absolute (temperature); Academician; Academy; ace (cards); acre(s); adult, formerly used to designate a motion picture at a showing of which any child under 14 should be accompanied by an adult, superseded by PG; advanced; alto (music); amateur; America; American; ammeter; ampere(s); angstrom; answer; area; argon (now usually Ar; chemistry);
