Chest Freezer

We have an old chest freezer that has been in storage (turned off!) for 6 years. We now actually have some space in the garage for it, but the mother-in-law says that they are not safe to use after they have been out of commission for so long. Can anyone confirm that she is correct? (There's a first time for everything...)

I can't see why it wouldn't be safe but it probably wouldn't work anyway as they usually seize up.

If you can switch it on and it works and gets down to temperature, I don't see why it wouldn't be safe to use. But I'd invest in a suitable thermometer first so that you can check that it's down to Minus 22 or thereabouts which I believe is the normal temperature of a freezer.

We dug one out of storage after 3 years and that was fine, can't see if it freezes properly how it can possibly be dangerous.
