who makes the best icecream?,,,,,,,Forget Hagendass[not sure if that's how you spell it] and Ben & Jerrys,,,I still think icecream from when I was a kid was the best.[I'm getting on a bit though] Here's two examples,[dont laugh] Tonibell and Walls Cornish.........

Mr Creemy's icecream. Made in Penygraig, South Wales. Incredible stuff! Won loads of awards and you only have to try it to see why. Best I've ever tasted.
I'd second "harbour bar" in Scarborough. Knickerbocker glory, yum. Worth the 90 min drive. Second would be Baskin Robbins and third Carte D'or (vanilla or cherry)

O.K,,,,,,,so we've established some of you make your own 'best ice cream you've ever tasted' and it seems all the other best's are up north,,I cant be traveling all around the country, [ although the way you describe them, I feel like driving up there now!],So to make it easier for me to try some greatest ice cream,,what gets the London/inside the M25 vote?
Anyone in Northern Ireland ever tried Morelli's? mmmmmm
Question Author
You're teasing me now,,,,,the're getting farther away!!
..cadwalader's of north wales is also divine... especially wild strawberry ripple ....sorry scarecrow...
Question Author
ermintrude35,,I hope you are not making up these exotic sounding icecreams, just to torment us Londoners,,,,,I'm trying to think of the name of these specialist chocolate shops we've got ,that sell ice cream aswell ??,I know there is one in Kingston ,surrey,, the're pretty good,a bit like Ben&Jerrys.........
Ah the North South divide opens up again!!!
Question Author
I've just remembered the name of the posh chocolate shops that sells really nice ice cream aswell,,' Thortons' I think.......helliebobs, I bet you havn't got them up north
Mr Creamy's in the rhondda, in south wales - their vanilla ice cream is lovely so is the mint choc chip mmmmmmmmm

hartleys is the best its so creamy in so many flavours

Haha scarecrow. We do have Thorntons up North. Have you tried 'clotted cream'? Went to Devon when I was about 6 (family holiday) and had my 1st taste of it. Yum. Went back for 6 years on the trot afterwards (for the scenery as well). Not had some for about ?? years. Went to Sainsburys on Fri and bought some "Kelly's cornish clotted cream ice cream". It's similar to what I vaguely remember tasting. Try some, or better still go to Devon and get the real thing. I am in a couple of months.
when I was a kid the best icecream ever was Rossies

(1) anywhere in Italy
(2) anywhere in New Zealand

If you can't get there, Waitrose do a really nice Cornish Vanilla, tastes good in a plate with liqueur drizzled over it, mmm.

Kelly's Ice Cream made in Cornwall with clotted cream. (especially the vanilla!!)

I agree with jno about the Italian comment,[although I havn't actually been to Italy],all the best ice cream vans that sell soft ice cream ,are allways Italian,we used to have one I think was called Di,sottos .[I think that's how it was spelt] it was delicious! I cant comment about his statement about Newzealand ice cream, never trid it,does anybody agree with him on that one........I'm taking a trip to Dundee Scotland quite soon, any good local icecream to look out for,,or do you think it will be a bit cold to be thinking about ice cream..I'ts just occured to me that this survey is going really well, and I wonder how mad it would have gone if I had asked the original question in the summer!!!

Glad to see Kellys of Cornwall mentioned - if in Cornwall visit Trago Mills near Liskeard for a really cheap scoop of same.

On a similar note, does anyone remember Lovely, a chocolate frozen dessert, advertised by Wendy Craig. It was supposed to be eaten thawed, but was even better if still partly frozen. Vanished years ago but Somerfield sold their own chocolate dessert which I used to freeze as a substitute. That has vanished now as well. Now I am freezing Galaxy milk choc drinks which are rather good.

I like chocolate ice cream as well !

Genuine Cornish clotted ice cream. That stuff is great.

I went travelling in Italy with my girfriend, and there's this great little place in Vatican City opoosite the San Pietro, which by btw is 100 years old. It was so nice we went back there to grab some more before we had to catch the night train to Nice. But there was a huge queue and we had to wait 40 mins! And we almost missed the train! But it was worth it!!

Minghellas

Produced in Wooton on the Isle of Wight by Anthony "The English Patient" Minghella's Mum & Dad.

The Original Vanilla is to die for.

It's the best kept secret of the Isle of Wight - mainly 'cos it's more readily available in Portsmouth than on the Island 'cos it's too expensive for Islanders (so you'll see 'New Forest' ice more on the Island - not to my taste...
