Tap the side of the top of the jar smartly but NOT TOO HARD on a hard surface. this should break the vacuum seal
Submerse the jar in hottish water for a while if the contents will stand it. Then wrap the jar and lid in a teatowel for extra grip and try
If neither of those work, then you could pierce the lid with a knife or skewer to break the vacuum seal
If the jar has been opened then gunk in the lid is the likliest cause, run under the hot tap to loosen
