In Latin, 'tostus' means 'baked dry' and thus our word 'toast'. In the 17th century, pieces of toasted bread were often added to beer to improve the taste and hence we got the idea of "Let's drink a toast to..."
I think we're all quite happy with the taste of beer nowadays - well, I am! - but what if that old tradition were revived? Would those of you who claim we eat soup expect a man to tell his wife when he got home a little late that: "I ate a couple of pints with John after work"?

We drink liquids whether or not there is solid material in them...simple as that.

so what quizmonster is basically saying is that if he was by any chance invited to a restaurant, he would pick a bowl of soup and drink it! Vegetables and all. with croutons sticking to his face, just out of principle that soup must be drunk. surely it depends on the the situation if you are at home then drink it. if your out in a restaurant then use a spoon like any other normal human being.
