Does anyone know of a good tool for scaling fish - apart from the back of a knife, etc. I usually do it in a bowl of water to stop the scales pinging off, but isn't there a better way?

Hope this does not sound cheeky but I ask the fishmonger to do it. No problem.
A fishmonger of my acquaintance introduced me to using a wire brush - but don't overdo it or you'll take the skin off as well!

Gef: not cheeky of you; I should have also mentioned that in the past when I've asked the fishmonger to do it, he's run a scraper over the fish 3 or 4 times - which takes most of the scales off, but I still have to do the rest when I get the fish back home.
We use one of those huge scallop shells - you can probably get them cheap from your fishmonger
