While I was watching American TV a British actor mentioned using H&P Sauce on eveything. What is it? It sounds like it is a type of a condiment used like some use ketchup. What is it made of? Thanks.

OK, it's HP sauce, not H & P sauce, named after the houses of parliament. If you imagine Branston pickle and take out the lumpy bits that's more or less what it is. Also known as brown sauce.
Further to TheHitMaker's description of it, the main ingredients of HP Sauce are these: Malt Vinegar, Tomatoes, Molasses, Spirit Vinegar, Dates, Glucose Syrup, Sugar, Salt, Modified Starch, Rye Flour, Tamarind Extract, Spices and Onion Extract. - Until you've tasted a Bacon sandwich on thick white bread with HP Sauce, i'm afraid you haven't lived! (my apologies to any vegetarians!)
According the label on a bottle - HP sauce is 'the only and original brown sauce made since 1899' and its distinctive taste is the 'result of HP's dedication to sourcing the highest quality ingredients and using aclosely guarded secret recipe.' It also says that it contains no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives and is low in fats and suitable for vegetarians. Ingredients listed include: malt vinegar (from barley), tomatoes, molasses, spirit vinegar, dates, glucose syrup (from wheat), sugar, salt, modified starch, rye flour, tamarind extract, spices, onion extract. I think it is brilliant and would never be without a bottle but be careful I had some in Canada once and it was made under licence in Ottawa, I recall, but didn't taste like the original. I stand corrected, HP sauce. However, I don't know what Branston pickle is either. Sorry, I'm American. Is it like Worchestershire sauce or maybe A1 steak sauce? Is that what you mean by brown sauce? Now you've really got me curious. Thanks. :)

A1 Steak Sauce is an almost identical condiment - just a little runnier
Just to say that HP (Brown sauce! to us northerners!) is gorgeous on cheese on toast!! Thanks!
HP sauce - and the many other brown sauces popular in Britain are similar in taste to the thin runny sauces known as steak sauces served in US restaurants.
However they are much much thicker.

Thanks for all of the replies. I am going to look for HP sauce the next time that I'm in an international food market. It sounds great! It's going on the shopping list right next to Golden Syrup as something else new to look for. Thanks again. :)
Don't forget HP also do HP Fruity as well mulberry - milder than the original, with apples and oranges. Buy both - you won't be sorry!
