Hi,

Is there a mackerel fishing season in the UK?
Can you tell me when it starts and finishes?

Will I be likely to catch anything if I go out on May bank holiday?

thanks

Yes, May is fine sg. The season is April to late September. Possibly into October but they're thinning out a bit at that time. Happy fishing!

Thank you Cetti, I can't wait.

Blimey, I got told off for putting this q in sport!
my wrist has been duly slapped

If your fishing from shore (beach casting) may to september is good because larger predetory fish drive the mackeral shoals closer to the shore as they themselves hunt the mackerel. If you are in a boat it is possible to catch them all year round but obviously you stand a better chance during the summer when the shoals are bigger.

I've caught Mackerel in a tidal scottish loch from the shore line, in November using a home made bay leaf and silver foil lure weighted to skim the loch floor.

Great, thanks Gammaray.
I will certainly be doing it the easy way, down to Brighton marina, jump in a boat and get taken out about 100 metres off shore for two hours.
It's going to be my birthday treat.
