kecap manis

I bought some kecap manis and was very surprised of it's taste, which reminded me of molasses, is this the right taste?

I havn't tried it ( I'm sure someone here has!) but I found this description and your molassesy taste sounds about right. "An intensely dark brown, syrupy-thick Indonesian sauce similar to, but with a sweeter, more complex flavour than, soy sauce. Kecap manis is sweetened with palm sugar and seasoned with various ingredients, which generally include garlic and Star Anise."
