i was told - donkeys years ago - that vodka couldnt freeze and that the best place to keep it is in the freezer. but my mate stuck a bottle in his freezer yesterday and its now a big block of ice. what's going on?!

Cheap vodka will freeze, decent vodka won't.

It also depends on how cold your freezer is, but generally, supermarket own/Smirnoff Red/Peatlings etc will freeze, but Stolichnaya/Smirnoff Blue/Absolut and expensive ones won't

BOO!!! Im not a cheapskate! Was my mate's vodka. I don't even really like vodka. I'm an Archers drinker.

Vodka is usually a solution of 40% alcohol in 60% water. When you put it in the freezer (at -18C) the water will freeze but the alcohol will not. Therefore the liquid portion has a much higher alcohol content. If your vodka does not form ice in the freezer then your freezer is not cold enough and I would be wary of eating any food that has been stored in it.

This might not apply to some specialist Polish vodkas which are over 65% alcohol.

And if it really is frozen - try this cocktail:

25ml Vodka (frozen)
6ml shot (Bottlegreens) elderflower cordial
Piper-Heidsieck Champagne
6ml shot Bols Raspberry

Add Elderflower cordial and frozen vodka to a champagne flute. Top with champagne and drop in the raspberry liqueur. Mix and enjoy!

Another little tit bit
Here in Finland we drink vodka as a schnapps and we put it in the freezer inside a milk carton full of water (which definitely will freeze) and then when we take it out for the table it remains cold for the length of the meal or bottle if your that way inclined
