2 options if you insist on the champagne name - you do pay more for the name - go to makro and get their own label Veuve Pelletier - 7 a pop and excellent value - a lot of restaurants seel this as a house champagne at 25 + a go.

Much better option - get a bottle of one of the award winning British sparkling wines. They keep winning awards and beating all comers and are excellent value - just can't be called champagne as this a protected name for wines from that region. Otherwise they are often far superior.

Have a look at a local Majestic - they have selection and can advise, or see English Wine info online at: http://www.englishwineproducers.com and give it a go . . .

Tesco's own brand champagne always seems to get great reviews - I went on a wine and champagne tasting day recently and the experts recommended it. I think it's around 10 a bottle (maybe 2 or 3 pounds over), so you might want to try it.
I agree with the Tesco recommendation.

Hate Cava, which is odd because my favourite red wine is Rioja, another Spanish wine.

But my favourite sparkling wine is red - a sparkling shiraz served chilled. Usually around 8 - 10 a bottle. Special and different.

nickmo, isn't makro a wholesaler?
Hi dave_c - its a cash and carry but if you don't have a card for entry yourself I bet you will know someone who does and can get a bottle for you. you can enter with a card holder as a guest by the way, so you could go and check the prices for other wines etc as well.
As I understand it, for it to be labeled 'Champagne' it must have originated from the Champagne region in France, but all countries make their own version, like Brut or Cava.

I recently had the Jacobs Creek sparkling Chardonay and the Banrock Station one too, both lovely and not too pricey.
Definitely get Tescos own brand Premier Crut...I think its 14 but really lovely
