Childs birthday cake
5 Answers
Me and my big mouth! I've just volunteered to make my friend's little girls birthday cake (she's going to be one) and there's going to be at least 20 people at the party on saturday! I've obviously made cakes before, but only small ones - any one got any nice (and easy) recipes/ideas that might help me in my hour of need???
As the Birthday girl is so little, I (and her mother) think a victoria sponge type of cake would be best..........
Thanks

For my eldest sons first birthday many moons ago I made a hedgehog cake . Very easy ..basic sponge mix but cooked in two pudding basins so you have two half semi circular cakes.
Sandwich them together with buttercream and slice a bit off the bottom so it stands flat. Make a quantitiy of chocolate butter icing and put this all over the cake and rough it up and stick chocolate buttons sideways all over for spines .two glace cherries for the eyes and a chocolate button for the nose .
It should come out something like this

The easiest Victoria sponge recipe I have is 4 of everything (flour, sugar, marg) and 2 eggs. If you keep these proportions in mind you can double/treble them, add flavourings to them etc. What I would do (if time permits) is make, say, 3 lots, and put a bit of cocoa in one, vanilla in another, and another flavour (orange perhaps) in another, then make fairy cakes. If you can stand the mess, let them decorate them as a game, with a prize for the winner.
Incidentally, I usually only use one egg in this recipe. Hope it goes well!
