creating a vegetable garden

I would love to create my own vegetable garden. How do I go about it. Does anyone know any good websites or books on this that they have found useful. Or if anyone has any tips on what to do or what not to do. Thanks x

Hello, I've recently started growing veg. i think the trick is to start small and build up. this year i'm growing courgettes, tomatoes, aubergine, raddichio...i lost a few items too! I grow quite a lot of herbs too.

i bought all my seeds from B&Q, but you can go to any garden centre, or order from suttons online. you'll need sowing compost, some seed trays, a greenhouse (mine is plastic - can't fit a full size glass one in my garden), a propogator maybe...it depends on what you want to grow and how much space you have. my spare bedroom was full of seedlings for about 2 months while i was geminating my seeds but it was worth it, and it's so rewarding watching them grow!

i found watching gardeners world really helpful (Monty Don grows loads of veg) and talking to people - you'd be surprised how many people do it these days.

to be fair though, the best way to learn is to try. and learn from your victories and mistakes. hope this helps?

Stacks of info here: http://www.gardenaction.co.uk and click on the Diary pages for veg and this tells you what to sow etc when, and so on, plus the veg pages have a really easy chart to follow for prep of the ground, sowing etc.

Good well rotten maure dug well in is a good start,most farms/stables more or less give it away if you have the means to collect it. While your saving for more expensive eqipment like greenhouses,lots of veg are happy just being planted into the ground. Broad beans will more or less grow in any soil. Peas are easy, nice hot radish,lettuce,onions from set,spuds aren't difficult. Tomatoes you can get already established,ready to plant out. We usually put a few seeds in trays on kitchen window,then pot on as they grow,half a dozen tomato plants will give you a good crop. I get my seed from 'marshals' but as Lorrymac said,'suttons' do the same service. There are a lot of good gardening forums on web,just google 'til you find one you'de like to join
