Thought I would have had one in my Encyclopedia of Chinese Food & Cooking (somehow think it is an error), and my Ken Hom book only tells us that it consists of:
soyabeans, vinegar, sugar, spices and other flavourings.
Sorry not to have helped you on this, lets hope someone out there can.

I don't actually know of anyone who makes their own rather than just getting it ready-made (I'm sure you know it's readily available in supermarkets). From my books, the best I can do is: Soy beans, wheat flour, salt, sugar, vinegar, garlic, chilli and sesame combined.
If you're still keen on making your own, I'd suggest getting some soy bean paste (which may already have chilli, sugar & salt added) as a base, and combining the other ingredients to taste & wheat flour/water to bulk.

Try this:
1 clove garlic
6 spring onions
2 red chillies (I suspect it's the bird's eye chillies.)
1 piece stem young ginger
1 Tbsp. light soy sauce
2 Tbsp. plum jam (I think she mat refer to the Chinese version, not too sure.)
1 tsp. ketchup (or tomato paste)
salt and ground black pepper (surprisingly, I thought she would have said "white" instead of "black pepper".)
2 Tbso. light sesame oil
Crush garlic. Trim and finely slice spring onions. Cut chillies in half, remove core and seeds and finely chop flesh. Dice ginger.
Place garlic, spring onions, chillies, ginger, soy sauce, jam, ketchup, salt pepper and sesame oil in a small pan with 2 tsp. water and simmer together to make a hot, sweet sauce.
It's an approximation, but works for us...

One here to try
4 tbs Soy sauce (dark or light)
2 tbs Peanut butter or black bean paste
1 tbs Honey or molasses
2 ts White vinegar
pinch Garlic powder
2 ts Sesame seed oil
20 drops chili oil
pinch Pepper
Just mix well - takes some stirring but will combine - and use...
Use dark soy for a sauce to go with beef and game, light for pork or chicken. Commercial recipes use the black bean paste, but the peanut butter is a suitable alternative that also adds a slight nuttiness to the sauce.
