I notice that Delia Smith advocates using a whisk for mashed potato, does she mean one of those hand held thingies ??

Yes ...I believe I have seen her use a hand held electric whisk on one of her programmes. I have done mash with mine and it turns out lovely ,no lumps, smooth and creamy .I have got one of these from Kenwood

Oh thanks ... I have got out of the habit of cooking and now back with man so need to brush up !!!
A word of warning though ...when I first did mash by this method as opposed to the old potato masher I had the wretched thing on high and had potato up the walls !! I break them up a bit with a fork first and then whisk on the lowest setting pushing it up to high as it mixes . I find it a great way of doing mash as I have arthritic hands and find all this bashing hard work. Good luck with your man !!
try a potato ricer, they much better (well i think so)
i agree mcfluff, a ricer does a great job of mashing potatoes.
i find a ricer is very handy tool. i also use it for making baby food.

but i find the regular old fashion potato masher works great.
I bought a handheld from Morrisons for about 7 and use it to do mash now, based on seeing Delhias, it's great, really creamy, do it all the time now, Shaneystar is right about potential mess if you dive straight in though.
I use an ordinary masher and put in butter and milk. Once it's all mixed, whisk vigorously just using a table fork. For some reason the mash goes lighter in colour, and becomes fluffy and creamy - I'm sure that it must be because air is being mixed in. But why this should produce the end result, I don't know.
