hope someone can help me with this one.im having problems starting my volvo.Basically sometimes it kicks straight in and other times it as dead as a doornail...turn the key and nothing at all.Ive checked for any loose connections and the battery and altinater are ok.I now presume its something to do with the starter motor but i dont understand why it starts up most of the time if it was.Any suggestions woul be appriciated, thanks...

sometimes they stick.
My old fiesta used to do that - would start fine sometimes, and get nothing at others.
Locate the motor, then next time it doesn't start, hit it with a hammer or a large spanner and try again. If it starts then, you know it's the problem and you need a new one.
Do you have an immobiliser? If there's nothing at all, not even a click, when you turn the key, it may be that.
what type of volvo is it,
i had a 740 and the same kept on happening, it was all down to a dodgy relay, which was housed behind the ashtray/radio, when i thumped it, the car started, dont know if thats any help.
check the earth cable where it bolts to the engine if its broken and moving about that would cause it
