Albert cake recipe

I remember being able to buy a cake called an Albert cake (I'm in the UK). It was an iced sponge cake with the bottom half encased in a type of 'crust'. Does anyone have a recipe? I've scoured the net with no luck.

Ingredients for Cake:
1/2 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup maple syrup
1 egg
1 cup boiled raisins
1/2 cup sour milk
1 tsp soda
1 1/2 cup flour
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg or cloves
Icing:
5 T brown sugar
3 T flour
butter and milk to blend
Instruction:
Cream butter and sugar. Add egg, beat. Add maple syrup, beat well. Dissolve soda in sour milk, add this and blend. Mix flour and spices, add to bowl and beat well. Fold in raisins. Bake in 2 layers at 350 degrees.
Icing:
Cream well and spread on cooled cakes.
Variations:
Boiled brown sugar icing may be used.

I don't know an exact recipe but an Albert Cake is basically a pastry base, a layer of Jam then sponge which you can ice if preferred. I remember making one in home economics in school so, using my trusted standard grade home economics recipe book, the recipe is as follows:
Shortcrust Pastry
100g plain flour
50g butter/margarine
20ml water
1. rub fat and flour together until it looks like breadcrumbs
2. mix in water until it forms a stiff dough, chill for about 30mins
Sponge
75g self raising flour
50g butter/margarine
50g caster sugar
15ml water
Method
1. roll out pastry to line a standard 9in cake pan
2. spoon in about 2-3 tsp of jam and spread over base
3. spoon in cake mixture and even out
4. bake at 180C for about 20 mins until cake is risen and golden brown
5. allow cake to cool then ice if desired
Not sure if this is the exact method as not made this for a while. Probably going to try it myself now! Hope this helps.
