Puppy's with diahorrea
My friends GSD dog gave birth two weeks ago. The puppies have been feeding well and are very active.Their eyes are opening and they are now walking about. Today they have all one by one started to have diahorrea. Some are quite watery. It looks like Korma curry sauce with cottage cheese in it(sorry to all you Korma lovers)They are all still feeding well and are trying to play with each other. The only thing different that my friend has done was on Saturday night she gave the bitch what was left of some home made veg soup with leeks in.Could this have effected the bitches milk the same as in humans. The bitch was due for a worming just after she got pregnant and she was advised to leave it till the pup's where wormed. She changes the towels in the whelping box at least three times a day. Has she a serious problem?

I reckon your friend needs to read up on this more before she ever allows her dog to have pups. Of course her dog will have the 'trots' her puppies too. Sensible feeding for a bitch who has just had a litter is basic common sense. If it continues after 24hrs then she must call the vet.
As above, plus, who advised her not to worm her dog? A pregnant bitch should still be wormed, as should the puppies from two weeks old. I weigh each pup every day to chart their progress, your friend should be doing this. If she notices any significant weight loss [easier with some breeds than others] or dehydration get the pups to the vet straight away. Of course a bitches diet needs supplementing, but stick to her normal food, a high grade puppy food or puppy milk......even this is an individual thing, I'm sure someone will come along and tell me I'm wrong, but that's what works for my girls.....but vegtable soup! Then again if she is used to that sort of food...who knows?
Keep an eye on them and let us know how she gets on.
Good luck

I hope by now that the puppies are either better or have been to the vet. Dehydration is the biggest killer of young puppies. They will presumably still be feeding off the mother at two weeks, so whatever she is eating will be given to them. She will also still be cleaning up after them so will be re-ingesting anything they pass.
A good quality puppy food can be fed to the mother and with a breed like GSD probably about three times her normal amount at this age.
Worming as divegirl said should have been carried out on the bitch. I do mine with Panacur liquid which is given to the bitch daily from day 42 after mating until two days after the puppies are born, which greatly reduces the worm burden the puppies are born with. The pups are then wormed at 2 weeks and regularly after that until they leave for their new homes. Mum should be done as well. However I doubt if worms are the cause of the diarrhea.
Keeping them warm is also paramount, as a chill could upset them and be fatal at this age.
I really hope they are all well again by now.
