Is it illegal to carry an unwrapped bottle of spirit in the street, here in the UK?

no
it is in glasgow and in newcastle, maybe more cities than this but i know these two do you for it.
certain towns also - down to the local bylaws - Pudsey W. Leeds is one example

Yes, in Glasgow off-licences and pubs always wrap your bottle without having to be asked.
More and more towns and cities are making it illegal to consume alcohol, in a public thoroughfare, I dont know about the carrying of such, but expect the interpretation, is there, if carrying a gun, you might use it, if carrying a bottle you may drink it, which if it is against the bye laws- why do it ?
