You can hardly kill a fig tree. We have broken off branches and just stuck them in the ground and had them to root.
Since it is Spring now, it's a great time to just go ahead and plant your tree. No matter the size, just put it in the ground. We have 4 turkey figs which get direct Northern winds and the cold never hurts them.

The trick to producing good fruits is to prune the tree at the right time to keep it strong and stocky- after the crops is harvested. Then you pray the birds don't find them.
