If you attended a BBQ where the guests had to bring some uncooked food with them, what would be really impressive?

I am thinking some venison steaks and John Dory fillets. But not sure if these will BBQ well.

Any ideas?

hi joe, methinks john dory such a delicate fish, myself i wouldnt barby it, as it would probably fall apart, venison steaks maybe be ok, but it is as aquired taste, what about a whole sea bass seasoned well, add some lemon, spring onions, and your fav herbs, maybe a dash of white wine, maybe dill be sparse though,or coriander is fantastic, wrapped in a thick foil parcel with a pleat in the middle to let it steam, sounds wonderful getting hungry

Indeed, sounds good. Just sea salt on my bass, tastes lovely as it is.
Hi Joe
Venison steaks sound delicious but if you are going for fish, then monk ish is the best for a BBQ It is a meaty fish and does not fall apart.
filet mignon
filet of beef
filet of pork
Pork Tenderloin - marinated in crushed rosemary and Grey Poupon Mustard - just smear it all over it and leave it in the fridge overnight - then just pop it on the grill.
Shrimp on 2 skewers.
Scallops on skewers.
Oysters on the half shell.
Thick slices of eggplant or zuccini or potatoes - sprinkled with your favorite herbs and olive oil.
Corn on the cob - just before they are done brush them with butter and your favorite herb - I like rosemary.

Asparagus
Fresh pineapple slices.
Fresh peach halves.
Fresh apricot halves.
Bananas sliced lengthwise.
to make a very good impression bring me along with you .

This is making me feel very hungry. I like the idea of scallops. Apricot halves, interesting

And thanks for the monk fish advice cruella.
Joe if you decide to do the scallops or shrimp - you might want to soak the wooden skewers in water for a while before using them - and use 2 at a time - spacing them an inch or so apart - so the shrimp or scallops stay on them better.

Sorry - you probably knew that already.:)

Venison steaks aren't a great BBQ meat as being very lean they can dry out very quickly. Depending on how you're fixed for a good fishmonger, whole salmon in foil with lemon and dill is good. In fact anything fish or fruit in foil is good, you prep it at home and turn up with it all ready to go on the grill in little (or big) parcels and Bob's your uncle. As a variation on BBW's bananas, put each split banana on a length of foil at least 3 times as long as said 'nana, add about a tablespoon of brown sugar (muscovado for preference) and then a slug of dark rum, pull the foil together so that you have one long seam along the top and then bend the ends upwards so that they meet in the middle and you have a sort of basket handled foil parcel. 5 - 10 mins (depending on how hot the barbie) and you have delicious desserts.
Do desert, people don't expect that : rip squares of silver foil .Slice banana length wise, chuck in a tablespoon of rum some sultanas and brown sugar fold into foil parcel and chuck on the coals for ten mins at the end of main cooking - delish ...take a jug of custard too
