salt in kippers

i buy fresh kippers in our local supermarket and so there is no index of content', they are smoked.
i read that any smoked food has a high salt content but as stated there is no indication of this.
anyone any knowledge

Smoked fish must have a minimum of 3% salt added to them while being processed. This is to safeguard against botulism or bacteria. I think the salt levels are within the guidelines of smoking fish so you are safe enough to eat kippers
